Path to C-Suite with Athena Alliance CEO, Coco Brown
Athena Salon
Your career up to this point has likely been climbing the proverbial ladder to the top of your business function. The saying “what got you here, won’t get you there” applies when you’re looking to enter the C-suite. You are no longer climbing a vertical ladder, once in the C-suite, you are aligned horizontally with a team of functionally diverse leaders who are running the business together.
In some cases, you may reach the top level of business without holding a CxO title. In this session, when we use the term C-suite, this is inclusive of any leader (regardless of their title) who reports to the CEO as part of the CEO’s executive staff, or is considered by the CEO to be part of their leadership team.
There are fundamental differences in the way you operate as a C-suite leader from the way you have operated in any role you’ve held up until this point. No matter how far you are from the C-suite in your current role, your starting point should be understanding how different that domain is and what you need in order to be a capable contributor in that domain.
As a member of the C-suite, you become part of a cross-functional team leading the entire organization. This means your peer group will shift from a group of leaders who share a functional background with you to a functionally diverse set of leaders who run entirely different domains. Your responsibilities evolve from running a tower to running a business. Your participation in this domain will require you to “speak more languages”, improve your diplomacy skills, and – at times – be self-sacrificing for the benefit of other teams or for the greater good of the company. You will be closely scrutinized by the board and equally looked to for support from your direct reports. All of these factors create a very different atmosphere of leadership and collaboration, therefore you must become an overarching steward of business.
Join us as we explore the path to the C-Suite with Athena Alliance CEO, Coco Brown. She’ll share her story and her five keys to success in reaching and performing in this domain
